Fort Aguada was constructed by the Portuguese in 1612 to protect against Dutch and Maratha invasions. The name 'Aguada' comes from the Portuguese word for water, as the fort housed a freshwater spring that provided water supply to ships passing by.

The fort's strategic location at the mouth of the Mandovi River made it a crucial defense point for the Portuguese. It was equipped with 79 cannons and had a capacity to store 2,376,000 gallons of water, making it one of the most important forts in Goa.
